Most studies up until now have focused on transgender adults, and while there are some studies about young transgender children, there is little research about transgender teens, what their lives are like, and what they need in terms of support.    We want to change that.  It is our hope that this research, which is being conducted with the support of various community partners, will help health care providers, mental health providers, organizations, and other services know how to best support trans teens and their families.

why are you doing this study?

Am I eligible?

What does the study involve?

There are two components to the study session: a one-on-one interview with a member of our research team (all of whom are LGBTQ-identified or LGBTQ allies), and an electronic survey which you will take on an iPad.  Both the interview and the survey take place in a private room with only the interviewer; family members will be in separate rooms.

how long will the session take?

Both the interview and survey are designed to take an hour or less apiece, so we budget about two hours for each session.  However, some participants may take less time and others may take more, depending on how much they share during the process.

where does the session take place?

We try to schedule the sessions at Boston Children's Hospital (BCH), and provide parking vouchers or public transit reimbursement to participants who travel to BCH.  In situations where distance makes it difficult for a family to schedule a visit to BCH, we can do remote visits in certain circumstances.  You can find out more about this during the scheduling process.

Yes, each individual participant receives a $25 Visa gift card upon completion of the interview and survey.

Do i receive anything for participating in the study?

Yes; your personal information will be kept strictly confidential.  Only the research team will have access to your personally identifying information and interview transcript.  Detailed information about your privacy rights and to whom we can disclose information will be on the consent form, which your interviewer will discuss thoroughly with you before you sign it.
NOTE: if you/your child are/is a Boston Children's Hospital patient, none of the information you disclose will appear in your/your child's medical record.

WILL MY PERSONAL INFORMATION AND/OR ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?

are you affiliated with the gems clinic at boston children's hospital?

No, we are based in the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine At Boston Children’s Hospital, which is different from GeMS.  However, the GeMS clinic has been a great help to us in finding transgender teens and families to participate in this study.
